Concussion Rehabilitation

Concussion Rehabilitation from Paramus Orthopedic Physical TherapyWhat’s this?

Concussion Management and Rehabilitation is the only program of its kind in New Jersey. Did you know that even after major concussion symptoms (like headaches) go away, most patients with concussions still have trouble in other physical and cognitive areas? Physiologic Post-Concussion Disorder is very common and easily missed. Our Concussion Rehabilitation program helps our athletes, as well as those who have experienced concussions from falls or accidents, return to their sports and favorite activities using safe, research-driven methods.

Here’s a Physical Therapist’s Guide to Concussion from the American Physical Therapy Association. It’s a great resource with a full list of symptoms you might be experiencing, and what your Doctor of Physical Therapy can do for you.

Who can benefit from Concussion Management and Rehabilitation?

  • Anyone who has sustained any type of concussion
  • People who are experiencing deficits in coordination, balance, multitasking, concentration, or even reading, after a concussion
  • Athletes in high-contact sports who need pre-season baseline testing
  • Athletes who have sustained an injury and would like to prevent a similar injury from happening again

What should I expect?

  • The key to a successful concussion management and rehabilitation program is customization. Our Doctors of Physical Therapy spend more time with you, and work in collaboration with your medical doctor and athletic trainer. We’ll build you an individualized treatment program that can help you to:
  • Reduce headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness
  • Improve balance and coordination, specific to your sport or activity
  • Correct improper running mechanics typically present after a concussion
  • Recover lost aerobic endurance, speed, and power
  • Restore, and in some cases even enhance, sport performance
  • Regain the cognitive multitasking abilities required to succeed in school and sports
  • Reduce the probability of a second concussion or another related injury when returning to sports or activities
  • What’s the first step?
